Introduction

1. Introduction

Our group consist of Elysia, Zin Mi, Rachel. We are researching on how effective different cleaning agents are on killing bacteria. We wanted to test whether whatever the different cleaning agents wrote on different articles are true and reliable also, which is the best cleaning agent? For example, on advertisements, Dettol said that it kills 99.9% bacteria. Is it true? Therefore, we chose this as our research project. Another reason is also, which cleaning agent is the best?

1.1 Research Questions

We got our questions based on 5w1H (Who, What, Where, Why, When and How)
We came up with these questions when we first started.

  • What do we want to find at the end of our experiment?
  • How do we want this experiment to succeed?
  • What do we expect to see at the end of our experiment?
  • Is it true that different cleaning agents could kill bacteria effectively?
  • Which kind of cleaning agents should we use?
And from there, we further came up with other questions based on these questions we started on.
  • How are we going to get the best results at the end of the experiment?
Using this question, we managed to research for the best method to help us get the most reliable result.
  • Which type of cleaning agents kills the most bacteria according to the different information they give on their website?
Using this question, we managed to research for the different information on the website about the cleaning agents which are Dettol, Mama Lemon, we are going to use and find out how much bacteria they can kill according to them.

Dettol

As written above in Dettol’s website, their brand started 80 years ago, therefore making them an experience company in the field of cleaning agents.
As it said in the advertisement above, its kills 99.9% of bacteria.

Lifebuoy

Lifebuoy said that it also kills 99.9% of germs as well, what’s more, only in 10 seconds.
Also below, it shows when Lifebuoy has been around for around 200 years.

Mama Lemon

This is taken from the mama lemon website, stating that it get rids of 99.9% of bacteria as well.
Above, proof that Mama lemon has been around over a 100 years.

Clorox

As mentioned above in Clorox’s website, they have been in this industry for the past 100 years! Making them even more experience as compared to Dettol.
Also, they said that they kill 99.9% of germs.
E. COLI:

E. coli stands for Escherichia coli, and refers to a group of bacteria that are commonly found in food and water. Most of these bacteria are harmless, but some can cause sickness. Those that cause disease do so by creating the Shiga toxin, which makes people sick. This toxin most commonly leads to stomach and intestinal problems, such as diarrhea and vomiting. Some people can get infections that become life-threatening, while others recover after about a week. Children, those with immune system disorders, and the elderly are at the highest risk of facing a life-threatening case of E. coli.
For example: Dettol company said that they could kill 99.9% of bacteria.
  • What to do to ensure a fair and accurate test using the method we researched about?
  • What are the things we should avoid doing in order to keep ourselves safe while doing the experiment?
This question allows us to research what to do and not do and the safest way that would allow us to have a fair and accurate test which is the Kirby Bauer method.

1.2 Hypothesis
We predict that Dettol cleaning agent would be the one to kill most bacteria.
